Poker : Betting Strategies

While it is well known that to win at poker one needs to be both skilled and lucky, what many forget to mention is the kind of skill one needs. While for the main part it is true that skill involves the way you play another important part is the betting strategy you employ. It includes your raises, good calls and bad calls. One betting strategy is a raise. If you have a strong hand preflop you keep raising hard and employ the right tactics to win. Another strategy is to place a strong bet on a weak hand. It is best to do this during the flop or turn. However this is very risky and is often the strategy of new players. Another good approach is check betting. Here you keep a strong hand and raise whatever your opponent bets.

To be good at texas hold'em poker it is important to employ the correct poker strategy at the right time. Some good reasons to bet are because you have the best hand and want more money in the pot, you have a good hand now but feel it can change so you want to cash in on what you have or you want to discourage them from betting against you, you have a weak hand and want to carry out the bluff or the semi-bluff, you want to see the next card but want to do so cheaply so you block it with a defensive bet etc.

Some reasons that aren't good enough to bet are: because it is your turn, you think you need to get the game going, someone else has bet, you think it is the only way to win as in the case of a poorly executed river bluff. If no one has come before you it is always better to raise than call as you get more control from raising. Most importantly you cannot be predictable so make sure you don't fall into any pattern yourself.
